Fall from Grace is progressing steadily!
The third installment has challenges. It's been a puzzle, keeping characters true to themselves while allowing growth and change. What techniques can a writer employ, to accomplish this?
First, use the timeline. Events change people and their outlook. The person isn't changed, not at their core but their reactions will reflect experiences. E.g. In this new volume, MC responds differently to this third body and uses Slaughter's helpful techniques to cope with shock and unease.
Second, change skills. The detective has increased his food evaluating skills by leaps and bounds. From confusion (why is Poppy's food so much better than fast-food chains?) to acceptance and now he can start to dissect flavors.
Third, familiarity! The characters know each other, respond automatically to comments and actions, learn to anticipate each other. From inside jokes to investigation process, MC's contributions have improved beyond what a DNR agent is expected to master.
Fall from Grace is sixty percent complete! Check back for further updates.
